In suitable cases, your crown can be made and fitted in one visit. The tooth is prepared and scanned, the crown is milled in the practice, and it’s fitted about 1 to 2 hours later.

What your fund pays back depends on your policy.
Who it may suit
A damaged or weakened tooth
A tooth that’s cracked, broken or weakened, where your dentist recommends a crown.

People who would rather not wear a temporary crown or come back for a second appointment.
Patients of either clinic
The CEREC machine is at Moorebank. If you usually see us at Prestons, you can book your crown at Moorebank.

What happens on the day
Check and plan
Your dentist examines the tooth and confirms whether a same-day crown suits it. If it doesn’t, they explain the other options.
Prepare and scan
The tooth is shaped to take the crown, then scanned digitally, so there’s no impression tray.
Design and mill
The crown is designed on screen to fit your bite and milled from ceramic in the practice. You can wait, or leave and come back.
Fit
About 1 to 2 hours later, the crown is checked, adjusted and bonded in place.
What to know before you book
It may help with
- Restoring a damaged or weakened tooth
- Avoiding a temporary crown and a second visit, when same-day suits the tooth
- A tooth-coloured, metal-free crown
Alternatives
- A crown made by a dental laboratory, over more than one visit
- A filling, if enough healthy tooth remains
- If the tooth can’t be saved, an implant, bridge or denture
Limitations
- Same-day may be possible in suitable cases only: your dentist confirms it at the appointment
- Available at our Moorebank clinic only
- A crown can last many years with care, but not forever
Risks
- Shaping the tooth removes some natural tooth, which can’t be undone
- The tooth may feel sensitive for a while afterwards
- The crown may need adjusting if your bite feels uneven
- Ceramic can chip or crack, and a crown can come loose
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Questions
Is it really done in one visit?
In suitable cases, yes. The crown is fitted about 1 to 2 hours after your tooth is scanned. Your dentist confirms at the appointment whether your tooth suits a same-day crown.
What do I do while the crown is being made?
You can wait at the clinic, or leave and come back when it’s ready.
Can I have a CEREC crown at Prestons?
No. The CEREC machine is at our Moorebank clinic only, so same-day crowns are made and fitted there. Prestons patients are welcome to book at Moorebank.
Do I need a mould of my teeth?
No. The tooth is scanned digitally instead of taking an impression.
What is the crown made of?
Ceramic. It’s metal-free and coloured to match your teeth.
How long will it last?
With good care and regular check-ups, a crown can last many years. How long depends on the tooth, your bite and your habits.
