Emergency appointment

The $75 starting fee covers the assessment and a treatment plan. Any treatment you need after that is extra, and your dentist tells you the cost before it begins. Starting prices are before health fund claims and may change after your dentist’s assessment.

What happens when you call

  1. Tell us what happened

Explain your symptoms, when they started and whether there’s been an injury. If you need to be seen, we book you in as soon as we can.

  2. Assessment

Your dentist examines the problem and may recommend an X-ray to see what’s going on below the surface.

  3. Relieve the immediate problem

Where it’s appropriate, your dentist talks through options to manage the pain or stabilise the tooth. Some problems are settled in one visit; others need a stabilising step first.

  4. Your plan and costs

You leave with the recommended next step and what it costs, explained before anything else begins.

What counts as urgent

Not every dental problem needs to be seen straight away, but these shouldn’t wait. Call us if you have any of them.

  • Severe or lasting toothache. Pain that wakes you up, lingers after hot or cold drinks, or throbs on its own can point to inflammation or infection inside the tooth.
  • Swelling in the gum, face or jaw. Swelling can be a sign of an abscess, which tends to get worse without treatment.
  • A broken, cracked or chipped tooth. Even a small fracture can expose the inner layers of the tooth and cause sharp sensitivity.
  • A knocked-out adult tooth. Pick it up by the crown (the part you normally see), not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it briefly in milk. Put it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in milk, and get to a dentist as soon as possible, ideally within the hour. Baby teeth should not be put back in.
  • A lost filling or crown. It’s less urgent than the problems above, but the exposed tooth is vulnerable and can break down further if it’s left.

Not sure if it can wait? Call anyway. Our team can ask a few questions, give you practical advice for the meantime, and book you in if you need to be seen.

When to go to hospital instead

If swelling spreads towards your eye or neck, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department or call 000.

The same goes for a serious injury to the face or bleeding that won’t stop.

What an emergency visit can and can’t do

The appointment is for

  • Finding what’s causing the pain or damage
  • Assessing swelling, a broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, or an injury
  • A plan for what happens next

Treatment it may lead to

  • A filling, crown or other repair
  • Root canal treatment, where it’s appropriate
  • Removing the tooth, when it can’t be predictably restored

Limitations

  • The starting fee covers the assessment and plan, not the treatment
  • Some treatment needs a separate or longer appointment
  • What can be done on the day depends on the diagnosis and the time available

When it’s not a dental visit

  • Severe facial swelling, or trouble breathing or swallowing, needs urgent medical care: go to hospital or call 000

Questions

What does the $75 cover?

It’s the starting fee for an emergency assessment and treatment plan. Treatment itself costs extra, and you’ll know the cost before it begins.

Can I be seen today?

Call us as early as you can. We prioritise dental pain and urgent cases throughout the day, and we’ll tell you when we can see you.

Will it be fixed at the first visit?

Sometimes. Your dentist assesses the problem first. What can be done that day depends on the diagnosis, the time available and the treatment needed. Some teeth need a stabilising step first, then planned treatment once things have settled.

What if it happens after hours?

After-hours help may be available depending on Dr Amgad’s availability: call the clinic and the call may be redirected to him.

I’m not sure it’s an emergency. Should I call?

Yes. Dealing with a problem early usually means simpler treatment. Our team can help you work out whether you need to be seen and what to do in the meantime.

Should I go to hospital instead?

For toothache, a broken tooth or a lost filling, call us. If swelling spreads towards your eye or neck, you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or there’s a serious facial injury or bleeding that won’t stop, go to the nearest hospital emergency department or call 000.
