Who it may help

  1. Chipped or cracked teeth

Minor damage may need a filling or bonding. A larger fracture can need a stronger repair, such as a crown.

  2. Lost or broken fillings

Your dentist checks how much healthy tooth remains before recommending the repair.

  3. Weakened teeth

A crown can protect a tooth that is cracked, heavily filled or has had root canal treatment.

What happens next

  1. Assess the damage

Your dentist examines the tooth and asks about pain, sensitivity and how the damage happened.

  2. X-rays if needed

An X-ray may be recommended to check for decay, look at the roots or find damage below the surface.

  3. Talk through the options

A filling, crown, root canal treatment or removing the tooth, depending on what’s found. You get a recommendation, a quote and the timing before anything goes ahead.

  4. Making and fitting a crown

If you need a crown, the tooth is prepared and measured, the crown is made to match the size, shape and colour of your teeth, then it’s fitted and adjusted to your bite.

Bridges for a missing tooth

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by fixing a false tooth to the natural teeth or implants either side of the gap. It closes the gap and helps stop the neighbouring teeth from shifting. The teeth either side are prepared to hold it, so your dentist will compare a bridge with an implant or a denture before you decide.

Same-day crowns at Moorebank

At our Moorebank clinic, a same-day CEREC crown may be possible in suitable cases. The tooth is prepared and scanned, the crown is milled in the practice, and it’s fitted about 1 to 2 hours later. You can wait or come back. Your dentist will tell you whether it suits your tooth.

Options, risks and limitations

Fillings

  • Can repair smaller areas of damage where enough healthy tooth remains
  • Not every cracked or weakened tooth suits a filling

Crowns

  • Can protect and restore a weakened or heavily damaged tooth
  • Need the tooth prepared, and may not suit every case

Other options

  • Root canal treatment may be discussed if the nerve is affected
  • Removing the tooth may be considered when it can’t be predictably restored
  • For a missing tooth, an implant or a denture instead of a bridge

Risks and limitations

  • Cracks can run further than they appear
  • Some teeth need more treatment even after a first repair
  • Preparing a tooth for a crown or bridge removes tooth structure that can’t be replaced

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Questions

Do I need a filling or a crown?

That depends on how much healthy tooth remains, where the damage is, and whether the tooth is strong enough for a smaller repair. Your dentist tells you after the assessment.

Does a broken tooth always need a crown?

No. Some teeth can be repaired with a filling or other treatment. Your dentist recommends the option that suits the tooth.

What if the tooth hurts as well?

Pain can be a sign of deeper damage or inflammation, so your dentist may need to check the nerve and may recommend more treatment. If the pain is severe or there’s swelling, call us and we’ll treat it as urgent.

Can I get a crown in one visit?

At our Moorebank clinic, a same-day CEREC crown may be possible in suitable cases. The crown is made in the practice and fitted about 1 to 2 hours after the tooth is prepared and scanned.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

With good care they can last many years. How long yours lasts depends on your bite, the tooth underneath and how you look after it.
